The Wires that presently live at Olde Fashion

We are so thrilled to have added Standard Wirehaired Dachshunds to our pack.  The breed is a delight and always full of life; adding fun for the Bassets and in our lives. We hope to be producing exceptional quality to the breed; as we looked long and hard for a good foundation. We are having fun in the show ring with them and expect great things. For information on any up coming litters you can check out this page  Wire Puppies

We are very proud of our foundation of Ragtyme Kennel in Janesville Wisconsin.

BREED STANDARD

I have to be a special kind of tough and fearless to hunt a badger.
I won’t apologize for being a hound. I dig, I hunt and I conquer.

My athletic body, keen mind and courageous spirit were bred and engineered for this job.

Description:

Dachshunds are active dogs and, once fully mature, will take as much exercise as you can give them and you are likely to want to go home before they do. They are, however, just as happy curled up on your lap, snoozing. They are loyal companions and generally make good family pets. They are not noted for their obedience but, with patience and persistence by the owner, they can be trained. However, they are Hounds and when they are off the lead, if they get a scent, they can “go deaf” when it suits them.

Temperamentally all varieties are very good at giving a good account of themselves and, as such, are excellent house-dogs who will guard your property from any unwelcome guests. His bark can be deep, especially in the Standards, and people are often surprised to hear such a deep noise coming from a dog the size of a Dachshund.

The Wires should have short, straight, harsh hair with a dense undercoat. There is a beard on the chin, the eyebrows are bushy, but the hair on ears is almost smooth. Coat texture can vary but most Wire coats will need to be hand-stripped a couple of times each year.

All Dachshunds are great characters, but Wires are especially extrovert and can be great fools. They do have very strong characters and need to know who the boss is, otherwise they can definitely rule the house. They do not need to be smacked in order to get them to behave; tone of voice is all that is needed. The Dachshund is intelligent, energetic and brave beyond his means. They make lively, friendly, loyal family pets.

They are a strong mix of both Hound and Terrier characteristics: he has a strong sense of smell, a loud voice and he also has the built-in instinct to search out vermin and rodents.
